Inner Sound Meditation

Beneath the noise of the day there is a sound that is always here. Inner Sound Meditation is the simple practice of turning attention toward it and letting listening replace effort.

Concentric rings of light suggesting sound moving inward toward stillness

Listening as the practice

Most practices ask us to do something. This one asks less. Attention is placed on hearing itself: first the room, then the body, then the fine ringing tone that remains when outer sound falls away.

A simple way in

Quieten the room

Sit where you will not be interrupted. Close the eyes. Let the breath settle without shaping it.

Follow the sound inward

Notice whatever can be heard, then notice what is quieter than that. Keep moving toward the subtler layer rather than trying to hold any one sound.

Rest in the silence behind it

Sound and silence stop being two things. What is left is presence, which is where this practice meets non-duality.

Where to go next

Sound recordings that support this practice are in Sekhem Music, and guided versions sit in the meditation library. Inner Sound is also taught alongside Shenu Meditation during workshops and retreats.

Meditation and breath practices are offered for spiritual and contemplative purposes only. They are not medical treatment and do not replace professional care.
