Sekhem: Listening for the Highest Inner Tone
Explore a meditation of inner listening, the All-Love mantra, movement, and quiet attention as ways to deepen into peace. Read the teaching and begin gently.
This teaching introduces a simple meditation based on listening for the highest, most consistent inner tone. It explores how focused attention, silence, movement, breath, and the All Love mantra can support a deeper movement into peace while meeting the mind’s thoughts and emotions. The practice begins with listening and develops through concentration, release, and continued awareness.
Listen for the Highest Tone
The technique is to listen for the highest, most consistent tone, meaning the highest vibration that is present. It is a very high-pitched sound. Keep your attention on that tone.
Everyone can hear these natural sounds when they become quiet and listen. They may be described as ringing, buzzing, humming, grinding, hissing, whistling, or even music. They occur at different frequencies.
At first, the sound may seem to be in the ears. The important shift in meditation is that it is no longer associated with the ears. It becomes an inner sound, listened to through another channel of attention.
External sounds can compete for attention. There may be drumming, a flowing river, banging, voices, or other activity. Listen for the highest and most consistent sound that can be heard, then place your attention there. As attention settles on one sound, that sound becomes more prominent and the others recede.
The same principle applies internally. The heartbeat is always present, and blood vessels in the ears make it possible to hear it, but the brain normally filters it out. If attention is placed on the heartbeat, it can gradually become audible.
Tinnitus works in a similar way. It is always present for some people, but when hearing receptors are no longer active there may be a low-pitched sound, buzzing, or white noise. Attention can make that sound stronger. Although people may dislike the sound and try to push it away, it can also become part of this meditation technique.
