Delta, Sleep, and Life Samadhi

Darkness is associated here with the release of melatonin, sleep and dreaming. Light can reduce melatonin production, while darkness supports the movement into sleep and the dream state. In this comparison, dreaming is connected with the delta state.

Ordinary sleep is not the same as samadhi. In sleep, awareness is not consciously present. In life samadhi, the body enters the deep rest associated with delta while awareness remains awake. The body may sleep, but consciousness does not disappear.

Two forms of samadhi are distinguished. In one, described as a dead samadhi, the heart and bodily activity stop, and there is no knowing. In life samadhi, the dream world is not known, yet the practitioner knows the Self and remains alive and aware.

The brain-wave comparison is used to make this distinction clearer. Delta is associated with deep sleep and healing. Samadhi is described as entering delta with awareness, so that the body rests completely while consciousness remains present.
