## A space for inward listening
The Darkroom creates a setting in which ordinary visual activity becomes quieter and attention can turn inward. In the retreat teachings, the central practice is Inner Sound: listening, relaxing, and becoming receptive to what is present. Inner light may also appear. The deeper invitation is to discover the peace and love to which the practice points, without becoming attached to a particular experience.
This manual explains preparation, the basic meditation, experiences described in the teachings, support during difficulty, and integration afterward. It is intended for participants considering or attending a supported retreat, and for readers who want to understand the process.
Darkness is a support for meditation. It is not a requirement for awakening. In the Darkroom dialogue, Patrick describes a meaningful forty-day meditation experience without using a Darkroom. Inner Sound can also be practiced in an ordinary room. [1]
